Combat Human Trafficking & Modern-Day Slavery

The Salvation Army is committed to restoring dignity and the human rights of every person to live a full and free life. To this end we work in coordination with our partner agencies around the world, freeing people who are victims of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Victims are rescued and helped with returning to their villages and homes and are sometimes placed in safe dwellings in Sri Lanka until such time as they can return to their own home. The cost of freeing, repatriating, and re-settling a victim could cost approximately Rs.70,000. Your Donation is Tax Deductible

Safe Water Wells

The Salvation Army is committed to health and wellbeing of every human being, be it physical, emotional or spiritual. In the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura Districts of Sri Lanka, Chronic Kidney Disease has lead to thousands of deaths, mainly through impure water. To combat this killer disease, for the past nine years The Salvation Army has been building safe water wells, complete with large-scale water filtration units. In August 2024, well number 30 was complete and opened in a remote community of the Anuradhapura District. The wells have transformed the lives of many thousands of families who benefit on a daily basis. The Polonnaruwa Hospital has reported a dramatic decrease in new cases of CKD in the all the communities that have received a well. We believe all Sri Lankans should have access to pure water as a basic human necessity for survival. Come partner with us and we can provide many more people in rural Sri Lanka with the clean water that is so vital for healthy lives and futures. Your generous donation can help many more families begin their little mango plantations, thereby achieving sustainable income generation for themselves and their children.

Women Of Worth

The Salvation Army is committed to enabling women live to their full potential. To this end, training such as sewing classes are conducted for women who are marginalized, disadvantaged, and living in poverty. This is a means for them to develop an income stream, feel of value and achieve some financial independence. The women are also able to develop healthy friendships with others in the group. In this testimony, Sushila describes how difficult her life had been in the past. She was one of 10 in her family, including her parents. Sushila followed 3 months of sewing classes in Vakarai and has now obtained a certificate which opens the way for her to help other women learn sewing. Sushila lives in a community where women get involved in many unhealthy activities and she sees an opportunity to engage these women in a more settled and healthier lifestyle through the sewing classes she plans on running.

Sustainable Livelihoods through Mango Cultivation

200 mango trees were distributed in the community of Walanwegama in Ippalagamuwa, Anuradhapura District. This project was undertaken in partnership with the Agriculture Department, Ippalagamuwa. These mango trees are of very high quality producing an excellent crop of mangoes which can be of immense help to this little village with few opportunities. These particular trees require less water and are scientifically budded to produce the best results for an area that is mostly hot and arid. Your generous donation can help many more families begin their little mango plantations, thereby achieving sustainable income generation for themselves and their children.

While there is life, there is hope. that’s what we at The Salvation Army believe. We are committed to bringing hope and a new future to all people, and to this end, we invite you to partner with us

Sustainable Livelihoods Through Mushroom Cultivation

Numerous opportunities for making a sustainable living have emerged for families struggling under the burden of poverty in places like the Anuradhapura district. Alongside the safe water wells being established, livelihood programs such as mushroom cultivation emerge. However, what is needed is some initial help to get up and running and this is exactly where The Salvation Army has been of assistance. The machine that grinds the compost and compresses the mixture into a pot saves the beneficiaries many hours in what a difficult and time-consuming process which was previously undertaken by hand. Training and help with sales are provided by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Small Industries. The local Divisional Secretariats are closely involved with the project as well. Currently fourteen families benefit from the one machine in that they are able to make a living that is sustainable and keeps growing. A machine along with start-up support costs Rs.4 lakhs. Your generous donation will go a long way to helping many more families in these needy communities. Thank you!

Paddy Drying Livelihood

When Kumari came seeking help to find herself a regular, sustainable income, she lived in great uncertainly, worked hard trying to dry paddy for sale on empty rice bags, and was finding it almost impossible to feed her family and make a reasonable living. The Salvation Army stepped in and built her a concrete slab so she was able to dry her paddy. This simple provision was all Kumari needed to get herself a larger and regular income and she went on to purchase weighing scales, build herself a house and now is even helping other neighbours and friends from her village. There are many others like Kumari who need a helping hand to go from ‘existing to living’. Your kind donation will go towards just this, helping people find new meaning and purpose for life and not just get on their feet but go on to help others in their community too. Thank you for your generous support!

Addressing Kidney Disease With Real Solutions

For 10 years The Salvation Army has been building high-end safe water wells in the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts where toxic water has led to Chronic Kidney Disease. Alongside this safe wells project, has been a community-based mobile medical clinic with approximately 200,000 people being tested for Kidney Disease. We are pleased to share that the Polonnaruwa General Hospital has reported a dramatic drop in the incidence of Chronic Kidney Disease in areas where the safe water wells have been established, so much so that we have ceased the testing and instead inject more funds into actual well construction. Village families no longer have to walk miles in search of rain water, they have pure drinking water close at hand in areas where safe water wells have been established. Come join us in our drive to provide more wells in the Central Province and address what is a devastating problem with a very real solution.Cost of construction a fully functioning safe water well with all the support required for the villages to flourish through the project is around Rs.8 Million a well. Your donation to this very worthy cause will see many more Sri Lankans living free of Chronic Kidney Disease. Thank you!

Bee Keeping Training Provides Income Through Honey Sales

With the ever-increasing demand for bees’ honey both in Sri Lanka and around the world, the Agriculture Department approached The Salvation Army for help to establish bee keeping as a livelihood project in the Anuradhapura District. This program is run alongside the safe water project. Families availing themselves of water are among those picked as beneficiaries of the bee keeping project. The Salvation Army provides all equipment such as hives, gloves, netted hats, smoker's, etc. A single program consists of no more than 30 hives per program so that training and honey production is at an optimum. The Agriculture Department and Small Business Development Office are responsible for selecting the participants, as well as providing the education and training. Approximately 180 families have been helped with 6 programs having been completed to date. The cost of 1 program is Rs.100,000. Thank you for considering supporting this valuable initiative.

Child Nutrition

Providing nutritious meals to primary school children is critical to their health and well-being to set them up for the rest of their life. Each month meals are provided to 16 high-needs communities across the nation, comprising around 30 children each. There are many more communities of young children that suffer malnutrition and need to be helped in this way. Meals consist of a balanced combination of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables and are prepared by Salvation Army workers in hygienic conditions and served with a large dose of love and care. We would love to be able to provide meals to many more groups of young children but cannot do so without your financial support, so please come partner with us for the sake of malnourished children. Your donation is of immense value.
