The Salvation Army is committed to restoring dignity and the human rights of every person to live a full and free life. To this end we work in coordination with our partner agencies around the world, freeing people who are victims of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Victims are rescued and helped with returning to their villages and homes and are sometimes placed in safe dwellings in Sri Lanka until such time as they can return to their own home. The Salvation Army is committed to health and wellbeing of every human being, be it physical, emotional or spiritual. In the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura Districts of Sri Lanka, Chronic Kidney Disease has lead to thousands of deaths, mainly through impure water. To combat this killer disease, for the past nine years The Salvation Army has been building safe water wells, complete with large-scale water filtration units. In August 2024, well number 30 was complete and opened in a remote community of the Anuradhapura District. The wells have transformed the lives of many thousands of families who benefit on a daily basis. The Polonnaruwa Hospital has reported a dramatic decrease in new cases of CKD in the all the communities that have received a well. We believe all Sri Lankans should have access to pure water as a basic human necessity for survival. The Salvation Army is committed to enabling women live to their full potential. To this end, training such as sewing classes are conducted for women who are marginalized, disadvantaged, and living in poverty. This is a means for them to develop an income stream, feel of value and achieve some financial independence. The women are also able to develop healthy friendships with others in the group. In this testimony, Sushila describes how difficult her life had been in the past. She was one of 10 in her family, including her parents. Sushila followed 3 months of sewing classes in Vakarai and has now obtained a certificate which opens the way for her to help other women learn sewing. Sushila lives in a community where women get involved in many unhealthy activities and she sees an opportunity to engage these women in a more settled and healthier lifestyle through the sewing classes she plans on running.

Our Emergency Services are often called upon by affected communities and local government agencies during times of flood, landslides, drought, and other natural disasters. During the COVID 19 pandemic, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Services partnered with the government to provide drinking water, food, medical equipment and transport of patients. Recent and ongoing floods have had The Salvation Army providing victims with drinking water, roofing sheets, plasticware and dry goods, along with invaluable compassion and friendship.

Numerous opportunities for making a sustainable living have emerged for families struggling under the burden of poverty in places like the Anuradhapura district. Alongside the safe water wells being established, livelihood programs such as mushroom cultivation emerge.However, what is needed is some initial help to get up and running and this is exactly where The Salvation Army has been of assistance. The machine that grinds the compost and compresses the mixture into a pot saves the beneficiaries many hours in what a difficult and time-consuming process which was previously undertaken by hand. Training and help with sales are provided by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Small Industries. The local Divisional Secretariats are closely involved with the project as well. Currently fourteen families benefit from the one machine in that they are able to make a living that is sustainable and keeps growing. A machine along with start-up support costs Rs.4 lakhs. For 10 years The Salvation Army has been building high-end safe water wells in the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts where toxic water has led to Chronic Kidney Disease. Alongside this safe wells project, has been a community-based mobile medical clinic with approximately 200,000 people being tested for Kidney Disease. We are pleased to share that the Polonnaruwa General Hospital has reported a dramatic drop in the incidence of Chronic Kidney Disease in areas where the safe water wells have been established, so much so that we have ceased the testing and instead inject more funds into actual well construction. Village families no longer have to walk miles in search of rain water, they have pure drinking water close at hand in areas where safe water wells have been established.
